Aylesbury Canalside

When I was growing up, the canal side was more than a little bit dodgy but it’s changed massively since then!

The old canal basin has had a facelift since then and most of the boats are now down at the new canal basin in Kingsbrook. What’s left is the odd boat but plenty of ducks (plus the theatre and Waitrose of course) to feed. There’s a couple of benches you can sit on (if not beingmobbed by the ducks and swans of course). You can then take a wander down the tow path.

The tow path is pushchair friendly but there is a bridge at Highbridge Walk which has steps. These are very wide steps (ie you can fit a pushchair on each step) and I’ve crossed it many times. You just have to take it one step at a time. If you want, or need, to have step-free access then use the tow path opposite the hotel rather than next to it.

Again, this used to be REALLY grim. And a bit seedy. Now they’ve re-done the footpaths and everything seems lighter and safer. We walked all the way up to the Oakfield Road playground before coming back again.

There’s no way I would have chosen to talk a walk down the canal ten years ago but now it’s a nice way to spend an hour or so and there are ducks to feed too!! Don’t dismiss it.
