This review of the playground on Eskdale Road in Stoke Mandeville, Buckinghamshire has been updated since the whole park had a recent refurbishment. The playground itself is set within a large recreation ground and there’s a good variety of things to do for both younger and older children. It’s a fully enclosed playground with seating for adults.
The site is a mixture of soft play surface and grassy areas. Some of those grassy area are where the play equipment is so mud might be an issue in winter months.
Equipment for older children
You can’t help but notice the MASSIVE play frame for older kids (approx 5-16 years) when you pull into the car park. It’s got two slides, small climbing walls, a look-out window and to climb to the top you have to navigate a series of rope platforms. It’s pretty cool. Smallest Child (6) was perfectly capable of doing it herself but the boys (11 & 13) also enjoyed scrambling up it. The biggest slide was a disappointment though. It’s soooooo slow. It actually took the kids longer to get down the slide that it did to get to the top of the tower! I think this might improve with use though.
We do love a good zip-line in this house, and they have a good zip-line here. It has the right balance between speed and snapping back so hard the kids fly off the end. Plus it’s easy to get on to.
The other equipment for older kids at Eskdale Road playground in Stoke Mandeville includes;

- Nest swing
- Mini fitness trail
- Mini trampoline
- Spinning see-saw (two different kinds)
- Accessible roundabout
- A very funky (aka difficult) variation of the monkey bars
Equipment for younger children
The playground at Eskdale Road has got a small play frame for younger children, and it is pretty good. It has good a mini-climbing slope, slides, a tunnel and games. Normally Smallest Child would have been playing on this one as well but she was lured away by the bigger frame and the zip-line.
There is also a couple of toddler swings, rockers, a noughts & crosses game, a little wooden toy car and spinning cup. There is also a see-saw this is more suited to younger children than older ones.
Most of the older children’s equipment at Eskdale Road playground is also fine for younger kids as well, I’m just highlighting the items that are targeted solely at them.
Other facilities on site
As well as the playground the Eskdale Road site also has the only skate park in Stoke Mandeville, a basketball hoop, outdoor gym, table tennis table and tennis courts. The skate park is quite small, but it adds something else for older kids to do.

I think they got it really, really close to being very good. The only thing letting it down is that slide currently. It wasn’t just us (or the clothes that the boys were wearing), other people were commenting too. Like I say, I’m hoping it will get faster with use. Over-all it’s a good playground and it’s one of the better playgrounds locally that manages to cater to a variety of ages. That’s not easy to achieve!
One thing I will say is that if you’ve got younger kids (under 8’s) then there is actually probably a lot more for them to do somewhere like Aston Clinton playground than here, but that park is now rubbish for older kids.

I’ve already mentioned Aston Clinton Hub but Weston Turville playground is also really good. Halton’s helicopter playground is very popular in our house too!
