At the holiday cottage we were staying at, they have this beautiful picture of Llangrannog beach looking through some rocks across the sandy beach to some idyllic cottages. So I suggested to Hubby that we should go and visit because it’s only about 20 minutes down the road. As with anywhere that I review, I did do some research before we visited so I knew where what the parking options were. I knew about toilets. All of that kind of stuff. The one thing I didn’t know was about the roads…

So most of the roads that we had been to in this part of Wales were not too bad. Yes, it’s a bit hilly but there’s nothing hideously steep. The road to Llangrannog beach and village is narrow, steep and has got some nasty turns in it. We had a couple of places where we came up against other cars. I’m very grateful that it wasn’t on the turns and I can only imagine what it was like what it would be like during peak season because actually it was really quite quiet when we visited. I don’t think that it’s one for towing a caravan!

Parking
Looking online I knew that there were two car parks one down by the beach, which sounded quite frankly terrifying because they just give you penalties for absolutely everything. And another beach 800 yd back up the hill which is free and has a park and ride. So that’s where I decided to park.
When we get there, there is absolutely no sign of the park and ride at all despite being made half term. I don’t know if the park and ride actually exists. I don’t know when it runs. I can give you zero details about it. It might be mythical. It might be real. Who knows what I can tell you is that the walk down to the beach is really quite nice. Although at times you are walking on the road and again I think it times I was going to get quite busy because it’s a single track road. The 800 yd walking back up the hill feels more like 800 mi because it is a fairly steep climb on the way back up. Just something to bear in mind for little ones

Llangrannog beach
Llangrannog beach itself is really really lovely. It’s a real mix of sandy beach and big pebbles so it’s not like a tiny pebble beach and it’s easy enough for you to move the rocks out the way to get to the sand. Plus there’s actually plenty of sand and it gets sandier as the tide goes out. It’s nothing like Aberystwyth there is proper beach underneath it. But it is worth knowing that there are stones there.
It’s not the biggest beach in the world. It is a relatively small bay, but as the tide goes out it gives you access to another stunning beach that’s around the corner. That beach is also accessible if you climb path next to the and then down some steps. So there’s no fear of you getting stuck on that beach or cut off by the tide.

There’s also some caves to explore. They’re not huge but they do go back a reasonable distance so the boys quite enjoyed going off and exploring those
Is it dog friendly?
Llangrannog beach is supposed to be dog free in peak season, however this was largely being ignored which does get a little bit frustrating
Are the lifeguards?
Yes there were lifeguards. They are on site from the end of May to to the beginning of September from 10:00 until 6:00 everyday
Llangrannog village
Hubby and Biggest Child did walk up the right hand side of the beach to the top of the cliff. There’s some beautiful views and some walks that you can do around there. We also spotted a statue up on the cliff to the left hand side of the beach and once we’ve finished on the beach we decided to have a bit of a walk around and see who that statue was. Turns out it was the guy that started the village and it’s quite a nice view from up there

It’s quite a few places in the village that you can eat and there’s a surf shop but other than that there’s not really anything else to do there other than go to the beach or stay in a holiday let
This review of Llangrannog beach is based on our experiences at the time of our visit. Things can change over time, including the facilities available. If you have any specific requirements such as access it’s always best to check with the site directly before visiting. If anything I’ve said in this review is no longer accurate then please do let me know. Thank you.
Our Llangrannog review
It was a really lovely beach. I was a little bit disappointed with the chip shop. It was quite nice that the pub is right next to it so Hubby could sneak off a little pint by himself whilst I watch the kids. It seems quite quite a safe little beach. Very clean with the stream going through it. It’s good fun

Definitely check out the ice cream shop, Caffi Patio, on the beachfront because their ice creams are amazing. We also had fish and chips from The Beach Hut and if I’m honest it wasn’t all that and a bag of chips

Hi, I’m Vicky. My husband and I live in Aylesbury with our three children; a 14 year old son, an 12 year old son and a 6 year old daughter. I (mostly) love spending time together as a family. We visit all kinds of places and we’re quite happy to drive a fair distance for a decent day out. A few years ago I decided to set up Free Time with the Kids as a way to share our experiences of these family days out.
You’ll find the essential information you need to know before your visit that can be surprisingly hard to find out. Where do I park? How much will it cost me to get in? Are there any discounts available? Are there loos? Can I take a picnic or get food? My aim is to be your go-to guide for all your free and cheap family days out across Bucks, Beds, Oxon, Herts & slightly beyond. I really hope you find the reviews helpful.
