One of my followers recommended I go down and review Aston Clinton Ragpits in Buckinghamshire. I didn’t really know what to expect, but she said they are at their most beautiful in June so we went down yesterday to have a look around. First of all, what’s a ragpit?? Turns out it’s a chalk pit. Obviously!
Aston Clinton Ragpits is a really small nature reserve just down the hill from the entrance to Wendover Woods. It’s a haven for orchids and apparently they have eight different species of orchid and 25 different species of butterfly. Certainly on the day we visited there were both in abundance!! It’s also full of very loud grasshoppers and bees!
The nature reserve is home to so many wildflowers you have to be careful where you step. There’s a labyrinth of little footpaths all over the site for you to explore. None of them really “go” anywhere, except back onto each other, but it’s nice to wander around and have a look at all the beautiful orchids.
Aston Clinton Ragpits are really peaceful (except when my kids are there!!) so it’s a nice place to just go for a family walk. You won’t be here for that long but it’s a good little find.
Access at Aston Clinton Ragpits
Because Aston Clinton Ragpits were used as a quarry it’s very hilly and uneven. There’s zero pushchair or wheelchair access to the site. Throughout the site there are steep slopes, narrow paths and sharp drops so keep an eye on little ones.
In order to access the site there are three kissing gates.
Our Aston Clinton Ragpits Review
I was really surprised by this place. I thought the boys would be the most interested, but actually Smallest Child seemed to have the best time. She loved running (carefully) around the paths and spotting stuff. It really isn’t very big at all but there’s loads to see and during early summer it’s really beautiful.
Parking / How to get there
As you turn off Upper Icknield Way towards Wendover Woods there’s a muddy lay-by almost immediately on your right. You’re allowed to park here.
Address – Aston Clinton, Aylesbury HP22 5NF
None on site
None on site. There’s one bench where you could sit and have something to eat but there’s nowhere else to have a picnic.
