We were in Ampthill to do a review of Little City and decided to stop for lunch at Houghton House. I’d see it on the English Heritage website (affiliate link) and thought it seemed interesting. If you’ve not heard of it then Houghton House is the shell of a 17th century mansion. It’s kind of in the middle of nowhere but it was a lovely little stop off for lunch.
To get there you have to go down a little track and park in the small car park immediately BEFORE you get to the houses. Then you walk a few minutes down to the house itself. Almost all of the external walls of the ground floor are more-or-less still standing, so are the internal walls. There’s a little bit of basement but that’s it.

The house itself isn’t huge but we had quite a lot of fun exploring the ruins, looking up all the chimneys to find the birds nests and MASSIVE spider’s webs. There’s some very good hide and seek games to be played here. There’s also a bit of a grass area at the back to have a play on or a picnic.
We were only there for about an hour, including lunch. I think if it was a nice day we could have been there for longer. You certainly couldn’t spend hours and hours there though. I believe there are various walks you can do from the car park.
It’s also a great place for photography as well. It’s quite atmospheric and interesting to look around.

It’s an interesting place to visit, and a nice place to have lunch. You won’t be here for that long, but if you’re in the area it’s a nice place to pop in to.

I’m Vicky and I am a mum of three living in Aylesbury. I set up Free Time with the Kids to review free and cheap family days out in Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire, mainly because I kept forgetting all the fabulous places that were recommended to me!! I love getting out and about with the kids (and hubby of course) and we have adventures all over the place. My reviews tell you all the things you need to know about the family days out and activites we’ve done such as how much it costs, if there’s parking, toilets and if there’s a cafe or if picnics are allowed. I really hope you find the reviews helpful. If there’s anywhere that you’d recommend please get in touch email@example.com or get in touch via Facebook
