Messy Church, Southcourt Baptist Church

40 Penn Rd, Aylesbury HP21 8HW

Messy Church is a brilliant idea; during the holiday they hold one morning of fun for kids which is always based around a theme. The February half term event (20/2 at 10:30 – 12:30) is all about Earth, Stars and Space but other events this year will be based around Light and Colour (10/4), Plants and animals (29/5) and the human body (30/10).

During the session there are various craft activities; some generic, some based around the theme, inflatables, face painting, a babies area, a play, singing and everyone gets a hot dog as well! Tickets are just £1.20 and you pay on the door.

When we went it was very busy, possibly a little bit too busy in places, but the activities are spread across two rooms so we just went into the quieter room when it got too much. The crafts and activities all had a volunteer from the church on-hand to supervise and maintain order which really helped, particularly at the bouncy castle which could have descended into anarchy without it.

At the end of the session everyone sits down, the hot dogs are handed out (followed by biscuits), there’s a little play and then a sing-along. The one we attended did have a religious theme, but it’s not thrust down your throat (just in case you’re concerned) and everyone is welcome to come along.

Parking is very limited and fills up quickly. That means that the local roads fill up quickly as well so we had to park a little bit further away. If you are walking then there is a pushchair area inside the church, there were a LOT of pushchairs though so if you can get the smallest ones to walk or be carried then that’s probably easier.

It was a nice way to spend a couple of hours with the kids for very little money, especially when you consider that there’s lunch involved too! It was busy and my ears were ringing at the end, but we came away with happy children and lots of crafts.
