I’m always looking for free and cheap things to do with the kids, and St Albans in Hertfordshire has loads of them! It’s very easy to spend an entire day out in the city without spending any, or at least very little, money. Here’s just a few of the places you could visit;
Verulamium Park
With it’s lake, free splash park, awesome playground and tons of space Verulamium Park has to be one the first free things to do in St Albans. But that’s not all, it’s also got tons of history to explore. There’s a piece of the original Roman city wall in the park and part of the villa as well!

St Albans residents can even visit the Verulamium Museum which is on-site too. There’s a fee for non-residents, but it isn’t too high.
St Albans Cathedral
Overlooking the park, you cannot help but spot the stunning St Albans Cathedral. It’s also free to visit. Whilst cathedrals aren’t necessarily top of a list of family days out, St Albans Cathedral does a really good job of putting on activities for kids.

The cathedral also happens to have a couple of stops in its grounds that are included on the St Albans treasure map trail. These stunning maps turn the towns and cities that you already know and love into things alien landscapes, funfairs and underwater adventures with hidden treasures to discover. St Albans Museum & Gallery
Just a few minutes’ walk away is the St Albans Museum and Gallery. This is a small, but surprising little freebie. You can be judge, jury and accused in the court room, or check out a jail cell. The basement has got a great little hands-on science exhibition as well. You can read my full review here.
(It also just so happens to have another treasure from the map to find nearby!)

Clarence Park
Another great playground in St Albans is at Clarence Park. As well as the newly refurbished playground there’s a park with loads of space to play in. There’s also a cafe on site that sells really nice ice cream!
Walk the River Ver
NO that isn’t a typo! There really is a River Ver and you can explore it. The full route is 17 miles long but there are shorter, circular routes you can take as well. You can download maps for free on their website.
Gorhambury Drive and Old Gorhambury House
It’s a two mile walk from the road, along Gorhambury Drive to Old Gorhambury House. That’s one hell of a drive. It’s a beautiful walk though, and a family friendly one. Access can be limited at times – check their website for times.
