Farmer Paul’s is a sunflower field just outside of Aylesbury, Bucks. In September they’re going to have a Maize Maze and in October it’s pumpkin patch time. We actually tried to go down to the sunflower field at Farmer Paul’s last year, but when we arrived it was incredibly busy and we decided to give it a miss. It was nothing like that this year. Either they’re more organised this year, less people are there or we got lucky but this year it felt much better.
The sunflower field at Farmer Paul’s in Aylesbury
When we first arrived I was really surprised how big the sunflower field was at Farmer Paul’s. This photo is taken about halfway along the field and it looks like the sunflowers go on forever! Also most of them were about 5ft tall which means it’s really easy to get a good photo of them. And for the kids to be able to see them properly, because that’s the main reason for visiting a sunflower field isn’t it!??!
The trail through the field is also surprisingly long. It snakes all over the place and took us about 30 minutes to walk through it all (and that was walking quite quickly). It’s quite a narrow path though so you are brushing past some of the flower heads. If you’re allergic to bees this is NOT the place to be btw. The footpath looks like it just wasn’t planted (or the young plants were pulled up) rather than the stalks being cut back, which is what happens at The Patch MK Sunflower field. That means it’s a lot easier to get around, with less chance of tripping over a rouge stalk. You are still walking across a field though so do bear that in mind. If it’s rained a lot then the ground will be soft. Personally I wouldn’t really want to take a pushchair through the trail because of the width of the footpath. It would be physically possible though.
Along the trail are several signs for the kids to spot with things like Red Kites, ladybirds etc on. There’s also several photo opportunities along the way. There’s a massive scarecrow at one point, some hay bales to climb on and a photo wall.
What else is there?
Realistically that’s it. There’s a couple of ice cream carts, and coffee cart and a pick you own sunflowers patch but that’s it. It’s very hard not to compare this place to The Patch MK, because that’s the closest alternative. In reality though they’re actually quite different. Farmer Paul’s doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that you can find at some other farms, it’s all about the sunflower fields. That’s reflected in the price though as it’s only £2 per adult and free for under 16’s.
Our Sunflower Field at Farmer Paul’s review
How long you will be here all depends on how quickly you walk through the field (obviously). We were there for about 90 minutes. Because the path is so narrow you cannot pass other people until you get to one of the few wide patches. If someone in front of you stops to pose for 1,000,000 selfies then you have to wait until she’s finished. If you’ve got someone behind you, you might be inclined to walk through it pretty quickly. Either way you’ll get to see a ton of sunflowers, and they’re really beautiful. If you want a full day out experience, then this probably isn’t the place for you. Personally I liked how much value for money they offered and the fact the shorter, smaller sunflowers seemed more accessible for the kids than some other fields I’ve seen.

What else is there to do nearby?
Hi, I’m Vicky. My husband and I live in Aylesbury with our three children; a 14 year old son, an 12 year old son and a 6 year old daughter. I (mostly) love spending time together as a family. We visit all kinds of places and we’re quite happy to drive a fair distance for a decent day out. A few years ago I decided to set up Free Time with the Kids as a way to share our experiences of these family days out.
You’ll find the essential information you need to know before your visit that can be surprisingly hard to find out. Where do I park? How much will it cost me to get in? Are there any discounts available? Are there loos? Can I take a picnic or get food? My aim is to be your go-to guide for all your free and cheap family days out across Bucks, Beds, Oxon, Herts & slightly beyond. I really hope you find the reviews helpful. If there’s anywhere that you’d recommend please get in touch contact@freetimewiththekids.com or get in touch via Facebook
