I hadn’t even heard of Ceredigion Museum before we walked past it and hadn’t read a single review so didn’t know what to expect. We had spent the day visiting lots of different places in Aberystwyth and were wondering around the town when we spotted it. Visiting Ceredigion Museum was literally a case of well it’s free so what do we have to lose?
I mentioned in my review of the Carmarthenshire Museum that we love a local museum because the’re always so quirky, and this place doesn’t disappoint at all. Where else would you find a life-size cottage rebuilt INSIDE an Edwardian theatre?
The theatre
The theatre itself has a really nice little seating area which looks like a great place to just sit and read for an afternoon. Downstairs there’s exhibitions about all kinds of local history; the dairy industry, theatres and an apothecary. All the cool random things you find in local museums.
Up in what would have been the galleries there’s plenty more to be found and again it’s a really eclectic mix of stuff. There doesn’t seem to be a theme to the collections up here really. They cover everything from nautical to chairs to phones to different types of wood!
The side exhibitions
It’s easy to miss them but do make sure you have a look at the exhibitions down the corridors as well because there’s some good stuff down there. There’s also a model of what Aberystwyth Castle would have looked like.
The stairwells are also packed full of beautiful artwork. Ceredigion Museum isn’t a big museum and we weren’t in there for that long at all but it was really interesting. When we visited it was at the end of a long day visiting various places in Aberystwyth and so the kids were kind of at capacity. That meant we didn’t spend as long looking around as we otherwise could have done. It is definitely the kind of place we could go back to.

Our Ceredigion Museum review
Our trip to Ceredigion Museum was part of a day out in Aberystwyth which involved loads of other free things and this place was a little surprise. There’s loads of really cool stuff in here. The only downside is that you have to go hunting to find what some of the stuff is. It’s also not a particularly interactive museum which will be off-putting for some kids.
