Aberystwyth South Beach Review

We visited Aberystwyth South Beach because we were going to see the castle and we had parked on the promenade literally right in front of the beach. Now I don’t know about you, but my kids are very much of the attitude that if you can see the sea you have to go towards it. So there was no way that we were going to be that close to a beach and not stepping onto it. Luckily I always come prepared for this and had gear with us.

Aberystwyth South Beach is a mainly shingle beach with lots of very small stones. They are perfect skimming stones and we spent ages just throwing stones and skimming and having great fun doing that. I tried to dig down to see if there was any sand underneath. I did a good old foot deep and couldn’t find any sand!

Having looked at another review of Aberystwyth South Beach apparently there is sand when the tide goes out. When we were there it was kind of mid-tide and it was coming in. So I can’t tell you what the sounds like but apparently it is there somewhere

The rocks and rock pools

However, the one feature that might just redeem Aberystwyth South Beach is that it has got some pretty decent rock pooling at medium to low tide. There’s this shelf of rocks that produce some really really good rock pools. They’re also full of crabs and you don’t need any bait. Literally all you need to do is just pick up a rock and there’s crabs underneath it so we did catch quite a few. There wasn’t massive amounts of other animals in there, but it was just nice for the kids to be able to catch crabs. Now that’s not sentence that you expect to say everyday

If you aren’t going to be going around on the rock pools, I would recommend wearing beach shoes though because the rocks can get really quite slippy with all the seaweed

Are there lifeguards?

There’s only lifeguards during the summer holidays

Is it dog friendly?

During peak season, dogs are only allowed in very small parts of the beach

This review of Aberystwyth South Beach is based on our experiences at the time of our visit. Things can change over time, including the facilities available. If you have any specific requirements such as access it’s always best to check with the site directly before visiting. This review of Aberystwyth South Beach was actually part of a day out in Aberystwyth. With that, we try to keep as cheap as possible, but we did multiple things during the course of the day. Hi, I’m Vicky. My husband and I live in Aylesbury with our three children; a 14 year old son, an 12 year old son and a 6 year old daughter. I (mostly) love spending time together as a family. We visit all kinds of places and we’re quite happy to drive a fair distance for a decent day out. A few years ago I decided to set up Free Time with the Kids as a way to share our experiences of these family days out.

You’ll find the essential information you need to know before your visit that can be surprisingly hard to find out. Where do I park? How much will it cost me to get in? Are there any discounts available? Are there loos? Can I take a picnic or get food? My aim is to be your go-to guide for all your free and cheap family days out across Bucks, Beds, Oxon, Herts & slightly beyond. I really hope you find the reviews helpful.
